In the gallery for the month of July is the work of Simi Berman. Artist’s statement:

“Working as an illustrator for many years, I began to notice the possibilities of liberating paint from its boundaries while illustrating an Italian Christmas story for children.  (Buon Natale, Natale – Franco Maria Panini-2000).   In illustrating, one often proceeds by using color to fill in previously outlined shapes.  While creating a two page spread of the characters flying through a night sky using texture and variation of color to provide a certain atmosphere I began to realize the expressive qualities of pure paint.  Painting in an improvisational way has become an absorbing challenge.  It is like walking a tightrope, with nothing much to hold onto.  A further challenge is provided by introducing “foreign” elements into the composition, (i.e. found objects, pieces of printed paper, etc.) and attempting to incorporate them into the whole by painting an environment in which they will find a harmonious home.”
